Assists in cultivating and maintaining gardens.

• Loading, unloading and moving garden supplies and equipment; preparing garden sites and plots using hand tools and machines; assisting with planting and transplanting flowers, shrubs, trees and lawns; maintaining gardens by watering, weeding and mowing lawns; cleaning gardens and removing rubbish; assisting with propagating, planting and potting seeds, bulbs and cuttings; tending plants by hand watering and weeding; adjusting mist irrigation systems, shade and ventilation.

• Works outdoors and carries out general maintenance of lawns and gardens but may also cut down and remove unwanted trees and shrubs or carry out construction activities such as paths and kerbing.
• Works in most weather conditions, but may also carry out work in potting sheds or glass-houses.
• Frequently works in dirty, wet, cold, hot or dusty conditions depending upon the season and the weather.
• Occasionally to frequently uses horticultural pesticides and fertilisers and various soil mixture additives. Protective clothing and breathing apparatus may be required.
• Frequently moves from one area or property to another.

• Medium to very heavy physical level demand.
• Stands and walks Stretches up and/or across when undertaking some general garden maintenance tasks such as hedge trimming.
• Frequently squats, crouches, bends and kneels when weeding or planting plants and picking up equipment.
• Occasionally twists the body or neck if operating ride-on mowers, rollers, or other equipment or working in trees.
• Workers will need to spray fertilisers and pesticides on an occasional to frequent basis.
• Medium to very heavy lifting and carrying of bags of fertiliser, soil mixes, and garden equipment, is likely to be required on a frequent basis.
• Repetitive movements will be occasional to constant (e.g. spraying, hedge trimming/garden edging).
• Driving is likely to be required of vehicles onsite, such as ride on mowers, or for transportation between sites.
• The use of hand tools both manual and mechanical will be frequent to constant (e.g. pruning shears).
• Mental skills necessary include practical, organisational and problem-solving skills.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
• Some tasks may be constant on a seasonal or rotational basis but only occur periodically.
