Harvests mushrooms and prepares produce for distribution.

• Undertakes planting; using hand tools and farm machines; operates farm machines to cultivate, fertilise, spray and harvest produce; sprays to control weed growth, insects, fungus growth and diseases; selects and picks produce according to size and readiness; grades, sorts, bunches and packs produce into containers; loads filled produce containers onto trucks.

• Works inside in growing sheds.
• Frequently works in dirty, damp and dark conditions depending upon the season and growing conditions.
• The use of horticultural pesticides and fertilisers is likely to be frequent (unless there is an organic orientation) and may irritate the skin and aggravate breathing problems such as asthma or hay-fever. Protective clothing and breathing apparatus may be utilised.

• Medium to heavy physical demand level.
• Stands and walks frequently unless driving machinery.
• Stretching up or across is may be required on an occasional to frequent basis.
• Occasionally to constantly squats or crouches and kneels for planting and hand weeding/picking activities.
• Twisting of the body or neck is likely if operating tractors and towing equipment.
• Bends frequently for some activities.
• Heavy lifting and carrying is likely to be occasional, but may occur for prolonged periods at times such as harvesting.
• Repetitive movements are likely on a frequent basis.
• Driving and operation of machinery such as tractor-pulled machinery is likely to be frequent.
• Hand tools and implements are likely to be used frequently to constantly.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, planning and mechanical skills.

An NZQF Level 1 qualification, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5).

For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification. In some instances no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
