Performs routine tasks in manufacturing footwear such as basic hand cutting of shoe components, delivering materials to machines, and inspecting and finishing completed footwear.

• Selects pattern and cuts material and shoe parts by machine; constructs components by machine and assembles footwear by sewing parts together; cleans and inspects shoes.

• Works indoors in workrooms or workshops.
• Work areas will usually be adequately heated and ventilated.
• May involve working in dusty and noisy
• Protective equipment will be worn where required.

• Light to medium physical demand
• Stands or sits at work benches or at cutting, sewing or shaping machines frequently.
• Frequently moves about the work area using various tables, equipment and materials.
• Stretching out or across is not required.
• Employees occasionally twist the body or neck when operating some machines.
• Bends over workbenches frequently
• Substantial contact with water or chemical substances is not required, although strong glues or adhesives may be used to attach soles and other shoe components.
• Frequently lifts shoes and other light production materials and tools.
• Cutting, sewing, hole-punching, and tacking will require frequent repetitive hand and arm movements.
• Driving is not required.
• Uses a range of hand and electric tools including measuring equipment, cutting instruments or machines, sewing equipment and a variety of other hand tools such as rivet machines, punches and heat-sealing equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include sewing and other practical skills as well as technical skills.

An NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4).

For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
