Puts together components and sub-assemblies that go into the production of metal products, electrical and electronic equipment, jewellery and precious metal articles, and joinery products.

• Locates, positions and secures components on workbenches; punches and drills mounting holes in parts and assembled products; assembles and secures components in sequence; assembles parts by nailing, screwing, gluing and dowelling, riveting, crimping, soldering or spot welding components; fits items, such as hinges, catches and knobs, to parts; deburs and finishes items using files, grinding wheels or emery paper; may manually wind light electrical field coils.

• Works indoors in factories and workshops, frequently at workbenches and/or on assembly lines.
• Work spaces will usually be adequately heated and ventilated to disperse the heat and other by-products of welding and other metal-working processes.
• Work sites may be dirty and noisy, especially if constantly working at metal assembly tasks.
• Employees utilise a variety of personal protective equipment including face masks, eye protection, safety footwear, overalls and gloves.

• Typically a light physical demand level.
• Stands frequently on concrete floors and walks about work areas to move equipment and carry out assembly tasks.
• Sitting is not required.
• Stretches both up and across frequently to weld, bolt, rivet or otherwise join and fit mechanical components in place, or carry out finishing tasks such as grinding.
• Occasionally squats, crouches or kneels for some assembly tasks.
• Bending is occasionally required.
• Occasionally twists the body or neck.
• Frequently handles welding and general light engineering tools and metals that may damage skin or hands.
• Frequently lifts and carries engineering materials, components and equipment about the factory, or operates overhead lifting equipment to lower or move items into the assembly position.
• Repetitive tasks are frequent especially in the use of hands and arms for holding welding, soldering, brazing, riveting or grinding equipment.
• Driving is not required.
• Uses a wide range of engineering and mechanical hand, power and machine tools.
• Mental skills include practical, metal and/or woodworking and technical skills.

An NZQF Level 1 qualification, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5). For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification. In some instances no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.
