Pallet racks are structures typically used in warehouses, and large wholesale/retail stores, to store and display supplies and products. Pallet rack installers help assemble and build these structures for businesses, according to pre-designed plans and specifications that are best suited to the size of the storage area, the type of product, and the nature of the activity onsite.

Reads plans/specifications of the racking/shelving system to be installed. May do a pre-installation site visit for familiarisation purposes and to prepare the site. Transports installation/assembly equipment to the site. May be involved in the transportation of materials to site. Checks all materials onsite against plans/specifications. Sets up the framework and installs all the shelving units to create the pallet racks, by assembling and securing components in sequence. Tests for structural integrity. Clears away any packaging/debris.

• Works indoors, but some spaces may not be adequately heated.
• Wears appropriate protective clothing such as gloves, overalls, boots, hard-hats, safety harnesses, and fluorescent vests as required.

• Typically medium to heavy range physical demand level.
• Constantly stands and walks and generally moves about the worksite as required. Does not usually sit down.
• Stretching up or across is an occasional to frequent requirement.
• Squatting, crouching, or bending movements are likely to be performed occasionally to frequently, especially when assembling at ground level or lifting.
• Body or neck twisting is likely to occur on an occasional basis.
• Contact with skin irritants and water is not typical.
• Lifting, carrying, pulling, or pushing is likely to be an occasional to frequent requirement.
• Climbing of ladders or steps while carrying loads is also likely to be an occasional to frequent requirement. Working from elevated platforms may also be required.
• Use of a wide range of hand tools of a simple, mechanical, and electrically-driven nature is an occasional to frequent requirement.
• Repetitive movements are occasionally to frequently required for many tasks such as operation of machinery, and using tools such as impact guns, hammer drills, rachets, and wrenches.
• Driving is likely to be required to move between a base and worksites.
• Mental skills necessary include practical and organisational skills.

• A Class 1 Driver Licence is typically necessary. A Class 2 Driver Licence is advantageous if required to move large quantities of equipment or materials to sites.
• Useful prior experience includes metal or wood large product assembly, scaffolding, building, and working with elevated platforms and lifting equipment. Otherwise no specific qualifications are needed.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
