Weighs, wraps, seals and labels fruit and vegetables.

• Obtains supplies of products and assembles bags, package folders and cartons; packs containers and bags with products, and counts, weighs and measures amounts and adjusts quantities; wraps protective material around products, seals bags and containers, and attaches pre-printed labels; counts and places bags and packages onto trays and racks, and into shipping cartons; records information such as numbers, weight, times and dates; monitors the filling of containers and adjusts machines to maintain volume and seal quality; monitors the supply and quality of containers and contents of holding tanks; checks the cleanliness and operation of machines, equipment and containers.

• Works indoors in a fruit and vegetable warehouse.
• Usually works in adequately ventilated factory or other work environments. Some packing tasks may include movement into and out of chillers.
• Wears protective clothing and equipment appropriate to tasks and food safety and health requirements.

• Light to medium physical demand levels.
• Stands constantly when working.
• Stretching across is a frequent requirement for packers.
• Squatting or crouching movements may be required on an occasional basis.
• Bending is frequent where lifting or leaning over packing equipment is required.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required on an occasional basis.
• Contact with skin irritants is not usually a component of the job. Significant contact with water is possible if the produce is washed however, this is mitigated by the use of protective clothing.
• Lifting and carrying is required when moving packed containers and when bringing product to be packed to the packing area.
• Repetitive hand/arm movements are required constantly for many packing roles.
• Driving is not required.
• Use of hand tools may be frequently required.
• Mental skills necessary include practical and organisational skills.

An NZQF Level 1 qualification, or compulsory secondary education (ANZSCO Skill Level 5). For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification. In some instances no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
