Operates machines and performs routine tasks to make beer, and package, store and despatch beer in bottles, cans and kegs.

• Weighs, measures, mixes, and processes ingredients; adds materials, such as spices and preservatives; operates processing plant; monitors product quality before packaging by inspecting, taking samples and adjusting treatment conditions when necessary; cleans equipment, pumps, hoses, storage tanks, vessels and floors, and maintains infestation control programmes; regulates speed of processing machinery; moves products from production lines into storage and shipping areas; packages and bottles products.

• Works inside the brewery.
• Frequently works in hot, noisy and slippery conditions and wears appropriate protective clothing and equipment.

• Medium physical demand
• Stands and operates beer-making equipment and walks about the brewery, adding and separating ingredients as required, monitoring and adjusting equipment and temperature gauges, operating pumps or suction equipment.
• Occasionally stretches up or across for some tasks.
• Squatting or crouching and kneeling movements are required on an occasional basis.
• Bends occasionally when lifting cartons, packages and raw materials.
• Twisting of the body or neck may occasionally be required.
• Substantial contact with water or skin irritants may occur occasionally but protective clothing will be worn as necessary.
• Lifting and carrying of cartons and packages of beer and equipment is likely to be frequent in the stores and cool store areas, however this will vary depending upon the level of automation within the factory.
• Repetitive movements may occasionally be required.
• Driving of forklifts may be required.
• Uses hand-held and hand-operated equipment specific to the production process. May use computerised control systems in larger breweries.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, technical skills and problem-solving skills.

An NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 4).

For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification. In some instances no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.
