Performs routine tasks associated in laying bituminous and other paving materials on roads, runways, parking areas, and other surfaces to be paved.

Loads/unloads equipment and materials; measures and marks out the area to be paved; digs out the area to be paved; levels and prepares the surface for paving; cements edges of the area to be paved; cuts paving stones to the correct shape and size; lays and secures paving stones; operates bitumen and other plant and uses hand tools to lay bitumen and concrete; operates/uses compacting machinery and tools; cuts expansion joints or similar; finishes paved area with protective treatments; and tidies the worksite.

• Works outdoors. Works in all but extreme weather conditions and wears appropriate protective clothing as required.
• Carries out work in dirty and dusty or wet conditions. May be exposed to bituminous fumes and heat, and/or sealant and solvent fumes.

• Up to very heavy physical demand levels.
• Constantly stands, walks, and moves about the worksite as required. Does not usually sit, unless operating or riding in a vehicle, or when weather conditions are too adverse to work.
• Stretching up or across is an occasional to frequent requirement, depending upon the specific work tasks being undertaken.
• Squatting or crouching movements may be often required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is an occasional to frequent requirement depending upon the specific work tasks being undertaken.
• Contact with skin, lung and eye irritants or water may be occasional given the varied tasks and likely physical contact with a wide range of substances and materials.
• Lifting, carrying, pulling, or pushing is frequently to constantly required.
• Repetitive movements are a frequent requirement for many tasks such as shovelling and laying materials on to prepared surfaces.
• Driving of trucks or other vehicles may be required (if so a licence will be necessary).
• Uses a wide range of simple, mechanical, and petrol-powered hand tools.
• Bending is a frequent requirement, especially where lifting is required.
• Mental skills necessary include practical and organisational skills.

• An NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification. In some instances no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.
• Roles involving vehicle operation on public roads will require the appropriate driver licencing.
• For roles involving work in or near the road reserve, some employers may require or prefer completion of NZQA Unit Standard 31957 - Demonstrate knowledge of working safely as a general worker on a worksite under temporary traffic management.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
