Cleans offices, residential complexes, hospitals, schools, industrial work areas, industrial machines, construction sites and other commercial premises using heavy duty cleaning equipment.

Vacuums carpets, curtains and upholstered furniture; cleans, dusting and polishing furniture, fixtures and fittings; removes rubbish and recyclable material, and emptying containers, bins and trays; strip wax from floors, re-waxing and polishing floors; cleans and disinfects laundry and bathroom fixtures, replenishes supplies and reports defective plumbing fixtures; operates industrial vacuum cleaners to clean floors, work areas and machines; removes dust and dirt from ceilings, walls, overhead pipes and fixtures; applies acids and solvents to surfaces to remove stains and dirt; removes lint, dust, soot, oil, grease, sludge and other residues from machines, hulls and holds of ships, and interiors and exteriors of furnaces, boilers and tanks; may clean exteriors of buildings by sand-blasting and applying solvents; and adhering to relevant health and safety requirements and procedures.

• Cleaners work indoors predominantly.
• Frequently work shifts either late at night or early morning when commercial premises are largely unoccupied. Issues of personal security and risk exist, workers often secure themselves indoors.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated.
• Protective clothing is frequently worn.
• Work spaces vary considerably in level of maintenance and some may be very dirty.

• Light to medium physical demand levels.
• Constantly stands and walks about the workspace.
• Stretching, reaching across, or climbing (ladders, steps) requirements will vary from worksite to worksite, but are likely to be frequent. Bending, squatting or crouching is likely to be frequent when cleaning awkward or low areas.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required.
• Frequent contact with skin irritants or water is likely with the use of chemical cleaning products and water. Protective gloves may be worn.
• Light to medium lifting, pulling or carrying requirements will be frequent, these may include lifting and carrying cleaning equipment, pulling and pushing cleaning equipment such as floor polishers and vigorous physical rubbing and wiping.
• Repetitive movements are likely to be frequent for tasks such as sweeping, vacuuming or polishing.
• Driving may be required when there are multiple worksites.
• Use of hand-held equipment will be frequent to constant.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, organisational and planning skills.

An NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). For some occupations a short period of on-the-job training may be required in addition to or instead of the formal qualification. In some instances no formal qualification or on-the-job training may be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
