Drives a tram to transport passengers on urban light rail networks.

• Stops at stations and set locations to pick up and set down passengers and freight; opens and closes doors before and after passengers board or alight; observes signals, track conditions, nearby traffic and prescribed speeds to ensure safety; monitors indicator gauges, changes controls and power supply poles and reports operating irregularities; checks time and adherence to timetables; may advise passengers on destinations.

• Works indoors typically constantly in the cab of a tram.
• Works in all weather conditions.
• Can be dusty, cold or hot but engine compartments are usually adequately heated and ventilated.

• Light to medium physical demand
• Constantly sits or stands in operating cab/compartment.
• Climbs up steps to enter and exit cab of tram.
• Uses upper limbs and hands to stretch down and across to operate controls.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling are not significant components of this job.
• Bending may be required on an occasional basis.
• Twists body or neck if reversing tram.
• Significant contact with water or skin irritants is not a significant component of the job.
• Lifting and carrying is not required.
• Repetitive hand or arm movements are required for the operation of controls.
• Driving of trams is a constant requirement.
• There is an occasion requirement to use hand tools or equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, basic mechanical and technical skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

Registration or licensing is required.
