Drives a train to transport passengers and/or freight on railways.

• Stops at stations and set locations to pick up and set down passengers and freight; opens and closes doors before and after passengers board or alight; observes signals, track conditions, nearby traffic and prescribed speeds to ensure safety; monitors indicator gauges, changes controls and power supply poles and reports operating irregularities; checks time and adherence to timetables; may advise passengers on destinations.

• Works indoors constantly in the cab of a train engine.
• Works in all weather conditions.
• Can be dusty, cold or hot but engine compartments are usually adequately heated and ventilated.

• Light to medium physical demand
• Constantly sits or stands in engine operating cab/compartment.
• Climbs up steps to enter and exit cab of train engine.
• Uses upper limbs and hands to stretch down and across to operate controls.
• Does not squat, crouch or kneel.
• Bending may be required.
• Twists body or neck if reversing train.
• Significant contact with water or skin irritants is not a component of the job although fuel fumes may enter engine compartments occasionally.
• Lifting and carrying is not required.
• Repetitive hand or arm movements are required for the operating of controls.
• Driving of trains is a constant requirement.
• There is an occasion requirement to use hand tools or equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, mechanical and technical skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3).

In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement.
• Shift work is common.
