Operates plant to spread and level hot bituminous paving materials and lay concrete on areas such as highways, roads and car parks.

• Operates bitumen plant using a range of foot and hand controls focussing on applying paving materials systematically to the area to be paved.

• Work indoors in vehicle operating cab.
• Works in a range of weather conditions.
• Usually operates as part of a road construction work team.
• Uneven surfaces can mean frequent jolting and jarring of the driver.

• Light to medium physical demand providing the position does not require other physical tasks to be carried out. Employees sit in the vehicle operating cab constantly. There is a need to climb up steps to enter and egress from the cab.
• There is a frequent need to use upper limbs and body to stretch down and across to operate controls.
• The job does not require significant amounts of squatting, crouching or kneeling.
• Employees are likely to twist the body or neck when turning to observe behind if reversing vehicle.
• Significant contact with water or skin irritants is unlikely.
• Lifting and carrying may be required but is not a significant requirement.
• Frequent repetitive hand and arm movements including pushing/pulling is required for operation of controls.
• Driving of machines is frequent to constant.
• Use hand tools or equipment may be necessary on an occasional basis.
• Bending may be necessary on an occasional basis.
• Mental skills include observation, practical and technical skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Registration or licensing may be required.

A Class 1 (full) Driver Licence with Wheels (W) endorsement allows operation of plant with wheels of not more than 18,000kg Gross Laden Weight (GLW) when driven on a road at a speed not exceeding 30 km/h (if speed on road to exceed 30 km/h then GLW must not exceed 4,500kg). A Class 2 or 4 (full) Licence with Wheels (W) endorsement is required to exceed these weight or speed limits. A Class 1 (full) Driver Licence with Tracks (T) endorsement allows operation of plant with self-laying tracks of not more than 18,000kg GLW.A Class 2 (full) Licence with Tracks (T) endorsement is required to operate heavier vehicles. To operate machinery that includes a roller then a Roller (R) endorsement may be required.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
