Loads and unloads baggage, directs planes, positions staircases, fills aircraft fuel tanks and performs other aircraft ground services to ensure efficient aircraft operations.

• Sorts baggage; drives baggage and freight to aircraft on forklifts and transport trolleys; helps position loading ramps and staircases; loads items into aircraft as per instructions, including livestock; fills aircraft fuel tanks; unloads aircrafts of freight and baggage; directs planes to parking positions; directs passengers; cleans aircraft.

• Works in vehicle operating cabs and in planes or baggage areas.
• Works outdoors on airport tarmacs and in baggage handling areas.
• Works in all weather conditions.
• Often works in noisy, smelly, wet or cold
• Indoor work areas are likely to be adequately ventilated but not be well heated.
• Usually operates as part of a team.

• Climbs up steps to enter aircraft.
• Sits in vehicle operating cab frequently.
• Uses upper limbs and body to stretch down and across to operate controls and to move baggage. Stretching and twisting of the body and/or neck is necessary when operating vehicles and when loading or unloading baggage, freight and animals.
• Significant contact with water or skin irritants is not necessary.
• Lifting or carrying is frequently to constantly required and may be of a heavy physical demand level.
• Frequent repetitive hand, arm and leg/foot movements and pushing/pulling are required for operate controls of vehicles and for moving baggage.
• Driving is frequently required.
• Squatting, crouching, kneeling and bending movements are frequently required for carrying cleaning and the loading and unloading of baggage and other goods.
• Use of hand tools or equipment is occasionally required for cleaning, securing ramps and staircases and fuelling aircraft.
• Mental skills necessary include practical and technical skills.

• A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
• An employee must: pass a medical test; be a New Zealand resident; gain airport security clearance and have a current New Zealand driver's licence.

• There are limited opportunities for flexibility of movement.
