Cleans, sterilises and packages surgical instruments and other hospital equipment, soft goods and linen in a sterilisation service facility.

Identifies equipment to be sterilised; cleans and sterilises surgical instruments and other hospital equipment; operates a variety of sterilisation machines; complies with infection control policies and procedures; prepares & packs medical items.

• Works indoors in public and private hospitals, other health care facilities.
• Work areas will usually be adequately heated and ventilated, clean and hygienic.
• Protective equipment will be worn as required.

• Sedentary to medium physical demand levels.
• Stands and/or sits frequently to constantly when operating sterilising machinery and walks about the work area to complete tasks.
• Stretches out and across occasionally when operating machinery.
• Squatting, kneeling or crouching is not a significant component of this job.
• Twisting the body or neck is not a significant requirement in this role.
• Frequently to constantly lifts and carries equipment.
• Bending may be required occasionally.
• Repetitive hand and arm movements may be required to carry out some sterilisation processes.
• Driving is not typically a requirement.
• Mental skills necessary include technical knowledge, machine operation and other practical and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
