Operates looms to weave yarn into cloth, carpet and other fabrics.

• Threads loom shuttles with cross-yarn arms; positions and feeds machines with fibre packages; repairs broken yarns by tying and splicing ends; examines finished products for defects and variations, reporting faults in machines, and carrying out quality control procedures.

• Works indoors in textile and fabric production factories.
• Work area will usually be adequately heated and ventilated.

• Light to medium work demand levels.
• Stands constantly to set-up and operate weaving machines and occasionally walks about the work area to collect materials.
• Stretches out, up and across occasionally to set-up the machine correctly with the required spools and bobbins, adjusting, checking and monitoring machine operation.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling movements may be required to work on and inspect machinery.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required.
• Bends occasionally to carry out the required tasks such as the operation of weaving machinery.
• Substantial contact with water or chemical substances does not occur.
• Occasional lifting is required to move boxes of cotton, yarn, wool or other supplies.
• Repetitive hand and arm movements are not required.
• Driving is not required.
• Uses a range of hand tools, machine controls and equipment to adjust and maintain cloth weaving machinery, handle material and equipment to inspect and measure production process.
• Mental skills necessary include technical weaving, machine operation and other practical and problem-solving skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3).

In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
