Operates machines to manufacture molten glass and shape glassware products such as containers, sheet glass, structural and stained glass, glass lenses and prisms.

• Sets up and operates glass-making machines to produce molten glass, and regulate temperature of molten glass; presses and blows glass into moulds to form glassware products; collects and examines samples for conformity to specifications and adjusts machine settings accordingly.

• Works indoors in glass manufacturing factories/workshops.
• Work areas may be hot and noisy.
• Protective ear muffs and other equipment will be worn as necessary.

• Medium physical work demand
• Stands constantly to carry out the tasks required.
• Occasionally walks about the workshop area to pick up materials and supplies.
• Stretches out, up and across occasionally to operate machines as part of the production process.
• Squatting, kneeling or crouching may be required on an occasional basis.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required on an occasional basis.
• Frequent lifting is required to feed or pour in molten glass (gobs) and to extract it at the end of the rolling, bottle-making or extrusion process.
• Bends occasionally in order to carry out the required tasks.
• Repetitive hand and large arm movements are required for some tasks.
• Driving is not required.
• Mental skills necessary include technical knowledge, machine operation and other practical and problem-solving skills.

An NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

At least one year of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualifications listed above. In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.

For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
