Monitors radio frequencies including VHF, HF, channel 16 and other emergency frequencies; sends and receives messages; maintains a log of messages sent and received; broadcast weather reports and warnings; answers queries; listens for and answers distress calls; works with emergency to find and locate vessels and other persons using radio distress signals; monitors equipment and may undertake minor repairs as required; may set up telecommunication equipment.

• May work outdoors when on location at emergency sites or military exercises
• Indoor work areas are generally well lit, adequately heated and ventilated.

• Likely to sit for prolonged periods of time when carrying out daily tasks.
• Bending, stretching up and reaching across is not a significant component of the job.
• Squatting, crouching and kneeling are not a significant component of the job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not required.
• Lifting, carrying and holding requirements are unlikely to exceed a sedentary demand level.
• Frequent to constant repetitive hand and finger movements are required when operating radios and other office equipment such as computers
• Driving may be required to reach locations; this is likely to apply solely to military radio operators.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, technical, research, planning and decision-making skills.

• A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. For entry-level positions on-the-job training is sufficient.
• Registration or licensing may be required.
