Inspects and assesses the damage and loss to insured property and business, estimates insurance costs, and acts to minimise the cost of claims to an insurance company.

Inspects damaged buildings, equipment and motor vehicles and estimates the cost of repairs; estimates business losses resulting from fire, theft and other business disruptions; reports the extent of damage and estimated costs to the insurer.

• Works indoors in offices for insurance companies, also works outdoors at sites resulting in insurance claims.
• Typically works in adequately heated and ventilated offices.

• Sedentary to light physical demand levels.
• Frequently stands and walks when inspecting insurance claim sites.
• Sitting is frequently required when producing reports and cost estimates in relation to insurance claims.
• Stretching up and reaching across may be occasionally required when carrying out inspections at the site of insurance claims.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling may be occasionally required when carrying out inspections at the site of insurance claims.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be occasionally required when carrying out inspections at the site of insurance claims.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of the job.
• Lifting, carrying and holding is not a significant component of the job.
• Repetitive movements with the hands are likely when using computers for data entry, word processing or taking written notes.
• Driving is likely to be required to facilitate scene investigations of insurance claims.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment will include computers, dictaphones, cameras, telephones, writing instruments and other general office equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include assessment, computing, decision-making, report writing and good communication.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. For entry-level positions on-the-job training is sufficient.
