Inspects vehicles driven on public roads to ensure that they comply with legal safety (roadworthiness) standards as set by Land Transport New Zealand.

Carries out Warrant of Fitness (motor vehicles, motorbike and trailers); Certificate of Fitness Class A (light passenger and cartage vehicles); and Certificate of Fitness Class B (heavy vehicles) inspections.

• Employees typically work indoors (workshop and office) and outdoors (testing station yard, vehicle bay) and in vehicles.
• Indoor workspaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated.
• May be required to work in all weather conditions when outside although exposure to the elements is not typically significant.

• The physical work demand is typically light.
• Sitting is occasional when assessing data, providing feedback to the vehicle owner and formulating reports.
• Standing and walking is frequently necessary when organising and carrying out inspections.
• Stretching up and reaching across is required occasionally.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling is required frequently.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required on an occasional basis.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of this job.
• Lifting, carrying and pulling may be required on an occasional basis (e.g. testing equipment).
• Repetitive movements with the hands are occasionally required when testing and due to the need to use computers for entering data and preparing reports.
• Driving is likely to be required on an occasional to frequent basis.
• Use of hand-held objects/equipment includes tools, testing equipment, computers, printers, photocopiers, telephones and other office equipment.
• Mental skills include analytical/investigative, problem solving, computing/report writing, knowledge of relevant laws and regulations, decision-making and communication skills.

A current New Zealand Drivers Licences for classes of vehicle being inspected and preferably at least a National Certificate in Automotive Engineering (ANZSCO Skill Level 3) with five years relevant experience. Employees must also pass a New Zealand Police “Fit and Proper Person” check.
