Monitors and enforces compliance of rurally or primary industry based activities with environmental and/or animal health and welfare and/or food production legislation, rules, regulations, bylaws, or standards, as promulgated by central or local government agencies.

Promote, monitor, investigate, and enforce compliance of rurally or primary industry based activities with environmental and/or animal health and welfare and/or food production legislation, rules, regulations, bylaws, or standards; participate in enforcement investigations; obtain and record evidence in a professional manner that is credible, admissible in Court proceedings, and will withstand cross examination; prepare evidence and make recommendations for enforcement; prepare and present expert evidence in the Environment or other Courts; prepare policy analysis, advice, statements, and plans; monitor and report on the state of the environment; provide guidance, education, and advice on compliance matters to stakeholders including the community, tangata whenua, consent or permit holders, interested or affected parties, and to central or local government agency managers or elected officials on the sustainable use of natural resources and regulatory compliance; ensure recovery of compliance monitoring costs; establish and apply procedures for monitoring consents or permits; provides compliance input to resource management investigations and policy development as required; provide specialist advice and report on pollution; be proficient at responding to large scale pollution events; may operate a 24-hour pollution incident response service.

• Employees typically work in a mixture of indoor spaces in offices/meeting rooms and outdoor spaces or in farm buildings (in all weather conditions) at a variety of rural locations.
• Indoor workspaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated.

• Sedentary to light physical demand. Sitting is frequent when assessing data and formulating reports. Standing and walking is necessary when carrying out inspection tasks. Stretching up and reaching across may be required occasionally. Bending, squatting, crouching, and kneeling may be required occasionally. Twisting of the body or neck may be required on an occasional basis. Contact with skin irritants or water may be required, but is unlikely to be a significant component of this job.
• Lifting, carrying, and pulling is not a significant component of this job. Other than typing, repetitive movements are not a significant component of this job. Driving is frequent. Use of hand-held objects/equipment will include cameras, recording devices, pens, computers, printers, photocopiers, telephones, and other general office equipment.
• Mental skills: analytical, investigative, detail, problem-solving, computing, reporting, knowledge of legislation, rules, regulations, bylaws, or standards, decision-making, and communication skills.

A relevant bachelor degree or higher (ANZSCO Skill Level 1). At least five years of relevant experience may substitute for the formal qualification. A valid driver license is required.
