Inspects rolling stock in railway yards, terminals and stations to ensure adherence to safety standards and operational rules and regulations.

Conducts visual checks of the mechanical, structural, electrical, pneumatic and hydraulic systems of railway wagons, carriages and locomotives for condition and correct classification.

• Employees work indoors and outdoors at train stations and associated buildings.
• Indoor workspaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated.
• May be required to work in all weather conditions when outside.

• The physical work demand is typically in the light physical demand range.
• Standing and walking is frequent to constant when conducting vehicle inspections.
• Sitting is likely when examining vehicle schedules/timetables.
• Stretching up and reaching across is likely to be a component occasionally when inspecting vehicles.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling is likely to be a component occasionally when inspecting vehicles.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required occasionally when inspecting vehicles.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of this job.
• Lifting, carrying and pulling may be required but is unlikely to exceed medium physical demand.
• Repetitive movements with arms and hands are occasionally required when operating a computer and writing.
• Driving may be required occasionally to frequently.
• Use of hand-held objects/equipment will include general office equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include analytical, problem solving, computing, communication and decision-making skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. For entry-level positions on-the-job training is sufficient.
