Examines and assesses the entry of people from other countries, administers visas and residency applications according to immigration legislation, rules and policies, and, where necessary, uses legal powers to detain and remove illegal entrants.

• Works indoors in offices for the New Zealand Immigration Service. May also work in New Zealand embassies, consulates or High Commissions, or at international airports.
• Works in adequately heated and ventilated offices.

• Typically sedentary to light but with occasional medium physical demand requirements.
• Frequently stands and walks when on airport or port duties.
• Stretching up and reaching across is not a significant component of the job.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling is not a significant component of the job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of the job.
• Lifting, carrying and holding may be occasionally required in the form of confiscated luggage and documentation.
• Repetitive movements with the hands is likely when inspecting documentation and entering data into computers.
• Driving is likely to be required when conducting off-site investigations or raids on illegal aliens.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment will include computers, other record-keeping/office equipment, stamping machines and equipment to magnify/verify authenticity of documentation.
• Mental skills necessary include assessment, computing, decision-making, report writing, knowledge of relevant immigration regulations/requirements and good communication skills with cultural sensitivity/knowledge.

A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. For entry-level positions on-the-job training is sufficient.
