Administers and enforces customs and related legislation, and assists with customs control of overseas passengers, crew, aircraft, ships, cargo, and mail.

Searches aircraft, ships, vehicles, premises and people, and checks documents and goods to detect illegal activities such as undocumented cargo, prohibited goods and illegal aliens.

• Works indoors in office situation usually at airport or shipping ports or freight terminals.
• Works outdoors at times when inspecting loads. May be required to work in all weather conditions.
• Works in adequately heated and ventilated offices.

• Stands and walks about when undertaking inspections.
• Stretching up and reaching across is likely to be required on an occasional basis when carrying out searches.
• Bending squatting, crouching and kneeling may be required for some activities.

• Lifting, carrying and holding is likely on an occasional to frequent basis.

• Driving may be required when moving around facilities.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment will include computers, x-ray machines, ion scanners, surveillance cameras. Customs officers may also work with dogs trained to detect illegal or dangerous substances.
• Mental skills necessary include organisational, assessment, computing, problem solving, decision-making, report writing, knowledge of relevant customs regulations/requirements and communication skills. offices.

Candidates must be New Zealand citizens or permanent residents and hold a current Driver's Licence (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). Applicants may be required to pass aptitude, personality, written, drug, medical and fitness tests, as well as undergo a Police background check to assess suitability. Trainees must complete a residential induction training programme and significant on-the-job training.
