Reads electric, gas or water meters, records usage, inspects meters and connections for defects and damage, and reports irregularities.

Reads meters within a designated area and records details into a hand held computer; checks meter numbers and records any broken seals or other damage; updates clients details and notes location of meters; downloads information recorded on hand held computer into a central database; may respond to customer queries or refer them onto the customer service department; may undertake customer surveys.

• Frequently to constantly works outdoors when going from house to house, or business to business collecting meter readings.
• Frequently works indoors in an office environment connected to a power, gas or water supply company.
• When working outdoors is likely to work in all weather conditions.
• Indoor work areas are adequately heated, ventilated, cleaned and well maintained.

• Typically light physical demand levels.
• Occasionally sits at a computer workstation and downloads data recorded on meter run.
• Standing or walking is required constantly to gather and record meter readings.
• Stretching and twisting is not a significant component but may be required to facilitate the reading of meters occasionally.
• Bending, squatting or crouching is not a significant component but may be frequent when attempting to access meters and read data.
• Repetitive hand and finger movements are occasionally required when recording metre readings into a hand held computer or downloading this information into the main computer system.
• Driving is frequently required to reach the designated work area.
• Mental skills necessary includes communication, planning, problem solving, recording and organisation skills.
