Trains and instructs recreational or commercial open water divers in diving techniques, safety and the correct use of diving equipment.

Coaches, trains and instructs sportspersons by analysing performances and developing abilities; motivates sportspersons and supervises practice; promotes sports and skills development, and oversees participation in sport.

• Employees predominantly work outside at pools or other diving areas or facilities. May work indoors at some pools or in a classroom environment.
• Employees work outdoors only when the weather does not impinge on safety.
• Employees use protective equipment as required.

• Light to heavy physical demand.
• Employees frequently stand or move about the work area to instruct students and demonstrate techniques.
• Swimming is frequently required.
• Employees may sit occasionally to produce reports and planning training activities.
• Stretching or reaching is likely to be required when setting up equipment.
• Squatting or crouching is likely to be frequently required, when checking diving equipment.
• Contact with water is frequently to constantly required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is likely to be required occasionally to frequently to move through the water and to monitor student activity.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is likely to be frequent when collecting and moving equipment.
• Bending is likely to be required frequently to facilitate lifting.
• Repetitive movements are necessary to demonstrate techniques, prepare equipment and propel oneself through water.
• Use of hand tools will include spanners, screwdrivers and specialised tools associated with management of diving equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, analysis and decision skills and organisational skills.

Divers must: be at least 18 years old, have a current medical clearance from the Diving Hyperbaric Medicine Service, have a Certificate of Competence, issued by the Occupational Safety and Health Service of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment. This must be renewed every 5 years (ANZSCO Skill Level 3).

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
