Drug and alcohol testers may work in a fixed location such as a laboratory, or undertake their work through visiting clientﾒs offsite at their place of employment. They assist with a range of tasks associated with the collection of urine samples for drug and alcohol testing.

Greet clients; records donors' personal details; explains the procedure to clients and checks their personal details; instructs client on the method for collection; oversees collection of samples; ensures samples are not contaminated; orders supplies and maintains equipment; and drives to sites.

• Sedentary to light physical demand levels.
• Stands and walks frequently around the clinic.
• There is an occasional requirement for lifting within a light physical demand range.
• Repetitive hand and arm movements are required on an occasional basis (for example entering data).
• There is occasional use of office machines, including telephones, faxes, computers and printers.
• Bending, twisting and reaching is not a significant component of the job.
• Frequent contact with body fluids will necessitate the use of protective clothing and gloves and adherence to safety procedures.
• Use of hand-held objects and equipment such as pens and telephones will be occasional to frequent. Workers may also need to operate computers.
• Mental skills necessary include knowledge of safety and hygiene processes, analysis and interpretation skills, organisational skills, and communication skills including listening skills and general people skills.

To become a drug and alcohol tester a current first aid certificate and a current driver's licence is necessary if the collection of samples is required. Unit Standards are required: 25458 Perform Urine Specimen Collection in the Workplace for Drug Testing and 25511 Perform Urine Drug Screening in the Workplace (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). Working with a qualified sampler for a few days to ensure practises are adhered to is often required.
