This occupation group covers travel attendants not elsewhere classified. Occupations in this group include: Marine Steward and Train Attendant.

Checks passengers' tickets and directs them to seats and cabins; receives and stows food, equipment and cabin baggage; makes public announcements; conducts safety checks and demonstrations of safety equipment and procedures; assists passengers in emergency drills; carries out emergency procedures, assists and directs passengers in emergencies; distributes reading material, pillows, blankets and other amenities for the comfort of passengers; operates galleys, prepares and heats food for passengers and serves refreshments and meals; coordinates the sale of goods to passengers; manages the completion of any customs and immigration documentation which may be required; and tidies ship and railway cabins.

• Employees work indoors.
• Work areas are generally adequately heated and ventilated.
• Work spaces will be clean and well-maintained, but may be messy or unsettled at times - especially in the case of turbulent seas when passengers may experience travel sickness.

• Sedentary to medium physical demand level.
• Employees walk or stand frequently to attend to passengers’ needs and comforts.
• Sitting is not generally required.
• Stretching and reaching is occasionally required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of the job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of this job.
• Employees occasionally carry and lift food trays and items of passenger baggage, or possibly small children.
• Bending, squatting or crouching movements may occur occasionally.
• Repetitive arm, hand and finger movements may occur occasionally.
• Use of hand-held objects/equipment such as ticket punches, pens, bottle openers and life jackets will be occasional.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of communication, organisational and practical skills.

An NZQF Level 2 or 3 qualification, or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4)

In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job-training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
