Escorts visitors on sightseeing, educational and other tours, and describes and explains points of interest.

Meets and greets visitors; controls visitors' access to exhibits; plans and rearranges schedules and itineraries; plans, organises and conducts tours; arranges transportation and accommodation for visitors following planned itineraries; arranges entry to places of interest; answers questions, provides commentaries, issues brochures and tour literature, shows audiovisual presentations, and explains components and procedures at tour sites; may assist with installing and dismantling exhibits.

• Employees work either indoors or outdoors depending upon the specific work requirements of the role. Sites may vary from museums to outdoor thermal areas
• Employees may spend substantial periods of time travelling in buses or other vehicles.
• If employees work indoors, or in vehicles, the work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated. If employees work outdoors, activities may be weather dependent.

• Sedentary to medium work demand level.
• Tour Guides frequently stand, walk or sit to varying degrees depending upon the type of tour guide role.
• Stretching and reaching is not a significant component of this job.
• Climbing of steps or walking over rough terrain may be a significant component of this job. Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of this job, although it may be occasionally required.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not typically required, although it may be necessary if working in an outdoor environment.
• Medium demand lifting, pulling or carrying is likely to be necessary on an occasional basis for roles where carrying and loading or unloading of passenger baggage and supplies from vehicles are required.
• Bending squatting or crouching movements may occur occasionally.
• Repetitive arm, hand and finger movements may be required occasionally for data entry activities.
• Use of hand-held objects such as pens and microphones will be occasional.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, organisational and practical skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job-training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
