Nail technicians provide manicures, pedicures, and various nail treatments based on clients' nail care needs and preferences.

Welcomes clients to the salon; performs consultations and suggests services to clients; maintains a clean workstation; cleans and shapes client’s finger and toenails; removes old polish and prepares nails for services; performs hand and foot massages; trims nails and pushes back cuticles; recommends products and treatments to clients; applies nail art and rhinestones to client’s nails complying with all health and safety standards; applies nail polish and airbrush designs; maintains an inventory of nail bar products; sanitises equipment and tools between each client; applying various types of artificial nails; evaluates client’s finger and toenails and advising them on care tips and useful services/ products; listens to client’s requests and making suggestions for additional salon services; assists with product orders when needed; develops strong relationships with clients to keep them coming back; answers phones and assists clients with bookings (on and off-line); helps to maintain general cleanliness around the salon.

• Employees work inside beauty clinics, salons or private homes.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated with good standards of general cleanliness and hygiene.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Employees constantly stand or sit alongside clients, while carrying out beauty care tasks.
• Stretching and reaching is not a significant component of this job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of this job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is occasional. Latex gloves may be worn.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is not a significant component of the job.
• Bending will be occasionally necessary because of situations where the client is lying down and the therapist is required to lean over them to carry out certain process or tasks.
• Repetitive movements using hands are frequent.
• Driving is unlikely to be required unless a mobile service is offered.
• Use of hand tools will be frequent, small electric and manual equipment items are likely to be utilised in the nail care process.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, diagnostic, sales and technical skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
