Provides skin analyses, facial therapies, skin-care treatments and body treatments such as massage to clients.

Discusses client needs, analyses skin characteristics and advises on suitable skin care, treatments and application of make-up; applies general cosmetic and corrective make-up; performs manicures and pedicures such as decorative nail art, application of artificial nails, nail repair, and other specialised hand and foot treatments; performs facial and body treatments such as massages; treats unwanted hair through waxing, bleaching, tinting, depilation and electrolysis; evaluates beauty therapy processes and products; receives bookings, arranges appointments and maintains client records; provides advice on and selling cosmetic products.

• Employees work inside beauty clinics, salons or private homes.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated with good standards of general cleanliness and hygiene.

• Sedentary to light physical demand.
• Employees constantly stand or sit alongside clients, while carrying out beauty care tasks.
• Stretching and reaching is not a significant component of this job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of this job.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is frequent. There will be frequent contact with a range of chemical beauty care substances and solutions, as well as physical contact with people who may have infectious conditions. Latex gloves may be worn.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is not a significant component of the job.
• Bending will be occasionally necessary because of situations where the client is lying down and the therapist is required to lean over them to carry out certain process or tasks such as massage.
• Repetitive movements using hands are frequent with a number of beauty care tasks including facial massages.
• Driving is unlikely to be required unless a mobile service is offered.
• Use of hand tools will be frequent, but depends upon the processes being completed, both small electric and manual equipment items are likely to be utilised in the beauty care process.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, diagnostic, sales and technical skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3)

In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification.
