Assists guests in an accommodation establishment or passengers in a transport terminal by attending to and carrying luggage, welcoming and escorting guests, and attending to their general needs on arrival and departure.

Escorts guests or residents to their rooms; assists with baggage; advises guests or residents of in-house facilities and local attractions; receives and distributes mail, telegrams, packages and messages to rooms; delivers newspapers to rooms and lounges; may clean patrons’ shoes and arrange cleaning and laundering of clothing; runs errands as directed; may clean public areas.

• Employees work predominantly indoors in the reception and arrival areas of accommodation facilities and transport terminals.
• Employees usually work in well heated and ventilated work spaces that are clean, welcoming and well-maintained.

• Light to heavy physical demand.
• Employees frequently stand and walk about reception and arrival areas assisting guests and travellers.
• Employees may stretch occasionally when moving luggage.
• Squatting or crouching is occasionally required in this role.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally necessary.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of the job.
• Light to heavy lifting and carrying of suitcases and other baggage for guests is required on a frequent basis. Porters are also likely to move furniture and other items of hotel equipment about the premises and set up rooms for both guests and functions. Employees often use trolleys to transport large quantities of baggage so pushing and pulling is necessary.
• Frequent bending will be necessary when lifting items of baggage, furniture or equipment.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required for delivery and other tasks necessary in this job.
• Driving of vans or cars may occur on an occasional to frequent basis if a valet service is offered.
• Mental skills necessary include communication, organisational and planning skills.
