Sells and serves food and beverages for consumption on premises in a cafe or similar establishment.

Prepares and serves food and beverages for consumption; takes customers’ food and beverage orders; operates cash registers, accepts payments and prepares sales invoices; clears away used dishes and cutlery from tables when customers are finished; cleans and prepares tables for use; washes dishes, cutlery and cooking utensils; cleans cafe equipment such as coffee grinders, espresso machines and ice makers; participates in stock-takes and assists in putting away new stock.

• Works predominantly indoors, however a café may have an outdoor service area.
• Works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces when inside.
• Many hot liquids and sharp instruments exist in the kitchen environment.

• The physical demand on employees is in the medium range.
• Walks or stands frequently in the kitchen to undertake food preparation or collect orders, when serving customers or manning the service counter area.
• Sitting is not a significant component of the job.
• Occasionally stretches and reaches across, when preparing food or serving meals.
• Limited twisting of the body or neck is occasionally necessary when serving and organising stock.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is occasional through steam and dishwashing detergents and various cooking ingredients. Protective clothing will moderate this contact.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying of a medium demand level may be required frequently for large pots, food trays and certain food items.
• Occasionally bends for kitchen tasks such as picking up items from the floor.
• Squatting or crouching is not a significant feature of the job but may be necessary when unloading dishwashers.
• Repetitive movements are likely for some tasks such as cutting and slicing meat, serving or when working the register and eftpos machines.
• Use of hand tools/hand-held objects and equipment will be constant in the form of knives and a wide range of other utensils, as well as eftpos and cash registers.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, communication, sales, presentation and organisational skills.
