Prepares and serves espresso coffee and other hot beverages to patrons in a cafe, coffee shop, restaurant or dining establishment.

Prepares, serves and sells a variety of coffee beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos and other espresso-based beverages; cleans and maintains bar service area, coffee-making area and espresso machine; collects payment for sales and operates cash registers; promotes services and products; sells light snacks; selects and grinds coffee.

• Works inside, usually in cafés, restaurants, hotels and bars. May work outside if the facility operates an outdoor service area.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated, friendly and inviting but may become hot and noisy.
• Shift work can be necessary.

• Light to medium physical demand level.
• Employees stand or walk constantly about the service area to carry out required tasks.
• Sitting is not required.
• Stretching may occur but is unlikely to be a significant requirement of this role.
• Squatting or crouching may be necessary when unloading dishwashers.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally necessary when serving and organising stock.
• Light to medium lifting, pulling or carrying will be occasionally required, for bringing in stock and trays of cups and/or glasses.
• Bending is occasionally required when picking up and moving stock and other items in the service area.
• Repetitive movements are frequently to constantly required when operating a coffee machine or using a till.
• Use of hand-held objects/equipment includes coffee grinders, espresso machines and tills.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, communication, sales, presentation and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
