Prepares, mixes and serves alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to patrons in a bar in a licensed establishment.

Prepares, serves and sells cocktails, mixed drinks, bottled, canned and other alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, and a variety of coffee beverages such as lattes, cappuccinos and other espresso-based beverages; cleans and maintains bar service area, coffee-making area and espresso machine; collects payment for sales and operates cash registers; promotes services and products; washes glassware and arranges bottles and glasses; taps kegs and attaches supply lines; replenishes drink dispensers, shelves and refrigerators; sells light snacks; selects and grinds coffee.

• Works inside, usually in hotels, clubs, pubs, taverns or café bars.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated.
• The work space may become noisy.

• Typically medium but occasionally heavy physical demand level.
• Employees stand or walk constantly about the bar area to carry out required tasks.
• Sitting is not required.
• Stretching is occasionally required when reaching for bottles of alcohol or glasses from overhead racks or when restocking supplies.
• Squatting or crouching may be necessary when unloading dishwashers or tapping kegs and attaching supply lines.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required occasionally to frequently when serving drinks and when re-stocking.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying will be occasionally required, for bringing in beer crates and other liquor, glassware and stock.
• Bending is occasionally required when moving stock and other items.
• Repetitive movements are occasionally required.
• Use of hand tools/equipment will be constant, such as openers and spirit measures, beer taps and cash registers and eftpos machines.
• Mental skills necessary include communication and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 2 or 3 qualification or at least one year of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 4). In some instances relevant experience may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

• There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
• Shift work is often required.
