Provides care and supervision for children and young people living in residential or institutional facilities such as group homes and correctional institutions.

Plans and implements programmes of supervision and care for children in residential care; supervises and arranges activities to enhance the physical, social, emotional and intellectual development of children in residential care; wakes children and ensures they are washed, dressed, fed and ready for educational and recreational activities; supervises children during domestic activities such as eating meals and showering; maintains discipline, enforces regulations and behaviour standards, compiles disciplinary reports and assists in implementing remedial measures.

• Employees generally work inside and outside residential care facilities.
• Work spaces are generally adequately heated and ventilated; and are also clean and well-maintained.
• May be required to work with children with serious behavioural, intellectual or physical needs.

• Light to medium with occasional heavy physical demand levels.
• Employees walk about the work area frequently. Sitting is occasional.
• Stretching and reaching can be frequently required when assisting with the washing and dressing of children.
• Squatting or crouching may be needed occasionally.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant requirement of the job unless control and restraint procedures form part of the role.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of the job.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is occasional and is likely to reach an occasionally heavy demand level, if lifting a small child is required or control and restraint procedures are needed.
• Occasional bending is required when lifting equipment or children.
• Repetitive movements are occasionally required for using a keyboard to enter data into a computer and for some domestic tasks.
• Hand-held objects/equipment will be used occasionally in the form of office and activities equipment.
• Mental activities necessary include communication, practical, analysis and decision-making and organisational skills.

An NZQF Level 4 qualification, or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job-training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. Making application to work in this role is likely to involve a police background check.
