Performs therapeutic massage and administers body treatments for relaxation, health, fitness and remedial purposes.

Massages the soft tissues of the body, such as muscles, tendons and ligaments, to assist healing; utilises a range of massage techniques to enhance sports performance and prevent injury; administers treatments to promote relaxation, improve circulation and relieve muscle tension; assesses and treats specific soft tissue dysfunction and provides rehabilitation advice; employs other techniques, such as acupressure or Shiatsu, and complementary aids, such as infra-red lamps, wet compresses, ice, essential oils and herbal and mineral therapies, to assist recovery; assesses clients physical condition and case history and advises on stretching exercises and relaxation techniques.

• Works indoors in specialist clinics, sometimes out of home based practices.
• Works directly with the public, generally on a one-to-one basis.
• Employees will usually work in adequately heated and ventilated spaces. Work spaces will be clean and well-maintained and set up to provide a welcoming and relaxing environment to clients.

• The physical demand level is medium.
• Standing is frequently required at the massage table.
• Walking is frequently required about the workspace to gather equipment and move around the client.
• Sitting is occasionally required at an office desk to update records or to talk with clients.
• Stretching and/or twisting movements are occasionally required when carrying out massage.
• Lifting, pulling or carrying is not likely to exceed a medium physical demand.
• Squatting or crouching movements are not generally required.
• Bending movements are frequently to constantly required when working over massage tables.
• Repetitive hand and finger movements are constantly required to give massage therapy.
• Driving is not required.
• There will be occasional use of office equipment such as computers and writing instruments and massage equipment including a massage table, towels and oils.
• Mental skills include diagnostic, problem-solving and communication.

A New Zealand Register Level 5 or 6 qualification or at least three years relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required.
