Takes facial measurements and assists customer in choice of frame; shapes and fits lenses into frames; repairs spectacles, and sells a range of optical goods.

• Works indoors in retail or workshop environments, frequently in association with an optometry practice.
• Works at counters and deals directly with the public or may sit at a workbench and use precision equipment.
• Will usually work in adequately heated and ventilated spaces.
• Work spaces will usually be clean and well-maintained and set-up to provide a welcoming sales environment for customers with displays of glasses, frames and other equipment and products to assist with vision problems.

• The physical work demand is light.
• Standing is frequently required at sales counter.
• Walking is frequently required in the workspace.
• Lifting, pulling, carrying, stretching and/or twisting movements are not a significant feature of the job.
• Repetitive hand and finger movements are occasionally required for operating electronic tills and precise instruments to undertake minor repairs on glasses.
• Driving is not required.
• Office and shop hand tools in a workshop setting, grinding and precision optical tools (screwdrivers, pliers) are frequently used to repair and adjust frames. Employees may also use mirrors and measure and assess the best frames/lenses for the specific client.
• Bending, squatting or crouching movements are not required.
• Mental skills necessary include practical, communication, sales and organisational skills.

• A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
• Registration or licensing may be required.
