Designs, fabricates and paints signs for displays, buildings, hoardings, boats and structures.

Confers with clients and responds to their ideas to determine composition of signs; creates signs, including three dimensional signs, by measuring and calculating letter size, preparing the surface, applying background paint using brushes, sprays and rollers, and creating the letters using brushes, stencils, enamel paint and decals; creates wall murals, screen prints, gold leaf work and custom vehicle art; paints signs and letters using lacquers, varnishes, paints and other materials; paints signs onto various surfaces; prepares cost estimates for labour and materials; may erect and work on scaffolding.

• Works indoors when preparing signage and outdoors when erecting signs or paintings. Can usually only work outdoors in favourable weather.
• Due to the nature of some of the materials worked with, indoor work spaces need good ventilation. Work sites may be dirty and smelly, especially when painting is being carried out. Protective equipment may be utilised.

• Physical demand is light to medium.
• Sitting and standing will be required and squatting or crouching is occasionally required. Walking about the worksite is frequently required.
• Stretching up and across, and lifting and carrying is frequently required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required for some tasks when erecting signs. Bending is occasionally required when working over tables in order to mark, cut and paint.
• Climbing ladders or work on scaffold lifting platforms or on roofs when erecting signage is frequently required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required to use hands and arms for painting, brushing and spraying movements and for computing tasks.
• Driving is occasionally required to facilitate appointments with clients, inspection of sites and delivery of signs.
• A range of hand, power tools and equipment will be used including brushes, spray-guns, air-guns, computers and draughting-type boards, hammers, drills and fixing devices when producing and erecting signage.
• Mental skills include design, technical, painting, practical and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
