Positions and controls lighting equipment for film, television or video productions or stage performances.

Positions equipment, such as spotlights, floodlights and cables, and operates lights during filming, broadcasting and stage performances.

• Works indoors at television or movie studios, or outdoors on location shoots. Some light technicians may operate entirely in a production studio environment.
• Usually work occurs in adequately heated and ventilated spaces if indoors. Likely to work in all but extreme weather conditions when outdoors.

• Physical demand is up to medium.
• Standing and walking about the location is frequent.
• Sitting is not a requirement.
• Stretching and reaching across is likely to be occasional when setting up lights.
• Bending is likely to be frequently required when organising and adjusting equipment.
• Squatting, crouching and kneeling may be required when setting up lights.
• Twisting of the body or neck is likely on an occasional basis.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is unlikely.
• Lifting, carrying and holding is likely to occur on a frequent basis when moving and using lighting equipment but will rarely exceed a medium physical demand level.
• Repetitive movements are unlikely to be necessary.
• Driving of vehicles is not a significant requirement but may be required to facilitate travel between filming locations.
• Use of hand-held and power tools and equipment will include a range of lights and associated tools equipment.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, decision-making, problem-solving and communication skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
