A Traffic Camera Operator is responsible for the operation and maintenance of mobile traffic cameras within a designated area.

Speed camera operation (mobile and fixed); testing all speed cameras before deployment; loading film; operating the speed camera as per policy requirements; maintaining sufficient training in use of equipment; ensuring film is sent for processing within given timeframes; supporting any speed camera marketing strategies; giving evidence in Court when hearings are required; monitoring sites and reporting any problems or faults; maintaining equipment to required standards; reporting any faults in camera equipment or mobile units and organising for them to be fixed; providing clerical support when cameras are offline for repairs or maintenance; and preparing activity sheets and analysis returns as required.

• Employees work indoors and frequently travel in police vehicles. Occasionally they may be required to work outdoors.
• Police stations and vehicles are adequately heated and ventilated, but Traffic Camera Operators may be required to work outside in all weather conditions. Appropriate personal protective equipment is required.

• Light physical demand levels. Heavy lifting, pulling or carrying is not a significant component of this job.
• Sitting, standing and walking is frequent. Twisting of the body or neck, and squatting or crouching is likely to be necessary on an occasional basis when interacting with camera equipment.
• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of this job.
• Repetitive movements may be required when writing notes and typing data and reports into a computer.
• Driving is required frequently.
• Mental skills necessary include a high level of record-keeping skills and the ability to follow procedures. Technical knowledge is needed.

• NZQF Level 4 qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
• A Class 1 Driver Licence is required.
