Operates wood turning lathes to turn and shape wood stock.

Sets up woodworking machines and wood stock for correct cutting, planning, turning, shaping and sanding; operates machines to cut, plane, turn, shape and sand work pieces.

• Works indoors in workrooms, workshops, factories and furniture shops.
• The work area will usually be adequately heated and ventilated and have large open work spaces.
• Work spaces may be messy and dusty.

• The physical demand is medium to heavy.
• Standing is frequently to constantly required.
• Walking is frequently required to collect and move materials and equipment.
• Sitting is unlikely to be required.
• Stretching out and across is frequently required to set up machines and to feed wood.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling is unlikely to be a significant component of this role.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required.
• Contact with dust is frequent, protective equipment (e.g. dust masks) will be worn.
• Lifting and carrying is occasionally to frequently required and is likely to be medium to heavy physical demand.
• Pulling and pushing is frequently required to plane, turn and shape wood.
• Bending is frequently required in order to carry out the required tasks.
• Repetitive movements of the hands and arms are required.
• Driving is not required.
• Employees frequently to constantly use a range of hand and electric tools and machinery.
• Mental skills necessary include practical skills as well as problem-solving, design and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
