Draws sets of master patterns following sketches, sample articles and design specifications, and cuts out patterns for garments.

Confers with customers to determine material, styles and designs of garments; interprets designs, sketches and samples to determine pattern specifications; cuts out master patterns.

• Works indoors in workrooms.
• The work area will usually be adequately heated and ventilated.

• Physical demand is light.
• Standing or sitting is constantly required at drawing boards and pattern tables.
• Walking is occasionally required about the work area to facilitate the use of various tables, pieces of equipment and materials.
• Sitting is frequently required at sewing machines and over-lockers.
• Stretching out and across is frequently required to mark out, lay out and cut out patterns from designs.
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling is not a significant component of the job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant feature of the job.
• Lifting of light physical demand is occasionally required.
• Bending is occasionally required over cutting/work tables.
• Repetitive movements of the hands and arms are frequently required.
• Driving is not required.
• There is a frequent requirement for the use of a range of hand and electric measuring, marking and cutting tools, some may be electronic (Computer Assisted Design software).
• Mental skills necessary include practical sewing, design, draughting, organisational, problem-solving and measuring skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
