Lays out fabric, marks pattern, cuts fabric using either computerised cutting machine or scissors.

Confers with customers to determine material, styles and designs of garments; interprets designs, sketches and samples to determine pattern specifications; cuts out master patterns; lays up and cuts fabric.

• Works indoors in workrooms.
• Work areas will be adequately heated and ventilated.

• Physical demand is light to medium.
• Standing is constantly required at marking and cutting tables.
• Walking is occasionally required about the work area to facilitate the selecting of patterns and fabrics.
• Sitting is unlikely to be required.
• Stretching out and across is frequently required to mark out, lay out and cut out patterns from designs.
• Bending over cutting work tables is frequently required
• Squatting, crouching or kneeling is not required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant component of the job.
• Contact with water or skin irritants is not required.
• Lifting and carrying is occasionally required for bolts of material but is unlikely to exceed a medium physical demand.
• Repetitive movements of the hands and arms for marking out and cutting activities are frequently required.
• Driving is not required.
• There is frequent use of a range of hand and electric measuring, marking and cutting tools.
• Mental activities necessary include practical, problem-solving and measuring skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
