Prepares stencils, and sets up and operates power-driven or hand-operated screen print equipment.

Embellishes printed products automatically and manually; operates photographic and electronic reproduction devices; prepares stencils using computer and hand cut methods; selects, mixes and matches coloured inks and loads them into screen printing presses; loads printed items into drying racks, and unloads and stacks dry items.

• Works indoors in studios, workshops or factories.
• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces.
• Employees with allergies or asthma may have difficulties when working with solvents.

• The physical demand is medium.
• Standing and walking is constantly required as they move from various machines to carry out printing processes and collect supplies.
• Sitting is not required.
• Stretching out and across, as well as pulling and pushing are frequently required when carrying out screening.
• Squatting or crouching may be required on an occasional basis.
• Twisting of the body or neck may be required on an occasional basis.
• Handling/contact with printing inks and solvents or other materials as screen cleaners is frequently required.
• Lifting or carrying of buckets of ink and dye containers and movement of screen frames will also be frequently required but is unlikely to exceed a medium physical demand.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required
• Driving is not required.
• Use of computers will be common if using computer assisted design. Photocopying, exposure tables, screens, paper, fabrics and other printable materials will also be used. Screen-printing machines may be used at factory sites.
• Mental skills necessary include design/drawing, decision-making and technical skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
