Binds books and other publications, and finishes printed products by hand or machine.

Sets up and supervises the operation of automatic binding and finishing equipment; binds full, half and limp-bound books, and repairs bindings; folds, collates and sews signatures by machine and hand; operates paper guillotines for pre-press and post-press paper cutting and trimming, and programmes electronically-operated units; operates systems to insert printed material into newspapers, magazines and envelopes; embellishes printed products automatically and manually.

• Works indoors in factories or craft workshops if doing hand-binding.
• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated work spaces.
• The workplace may require ear-protection to be worn due to the noise levels of some machinery. There may also be safety regulations in place in regards to the use of cutting equipment and conveyor belts.

• The physical demand level is medium.
• Standing and walking is frequently required to facilitate the programming or operation of equipment.
• Sitting is unlikely to be required.
• Stretching out and across is occasionally required.
• Squatting or crouching is not a significant component of the job.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not a significant feature of the job.
• Contact with water or other chemicals other than glues is not required.
• Bending is occasionally required over work benches and machines.
• Lifting is not generally required but if required is not likely to exceed a medium physical demand. The size and degree of plant automation will determine this requirement.
• Repetitive movements of the hand and arms are frequently required for many bookbinding tasks.
• Driving is not required.
• Operation a variety of machinery is frequently required including guillotines, spiral binding machines, sewing machines and book presses, gold foiling and folding machines. Employees will also use craft knives and glue.
• Mental skills necessary include practical and organisational skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
