Provides specialist assessment of and advice on individual trees or groups of trees, and tree management, primarily in urban environments, including that relating to tree health and risk assessment, qualification for regulatory protection, species selection, and site planning or development. Works with allied professionals such as Urban and Regional Planners, Landscape Architects, Architects, and Environmental Consultants to provide strategic planning for urban tree preservation, protection, and management.

Recommends course of action for care of trees; performs tree health, risk, and regulatory protection assessments; writes and presents proposals and seeks agreement with clients; advises on tree identification, pest identification and control, and pruning, transplanting, and felling principles and techniques; prepares tree inventories, arborist reports, memos, and other written documentation as required for construction and other projects; corresponds with clients, municipalities, consultants, and contractors as required; conducts site monitoring during construction, demolition, significant pruning, transplanting, or felling; may be required to project manage; provides recommendations for mitigation and best management practices for construction around retention of vegetation; provides information and coordination for risk management for clients; may give expert opinion or evidence in a variety of meetings, hearings, tribunals, or courts; may provide training to arborists; may conduct research.

• Frequently works outdoors in parks, public and private gardens, road reserves, subdivisions, and other areas of controlled tree and shrub growth. Works in most weather conditions, occasionally in dirty, wet, cold, hot, or dusty conditions depending upon the season and weather. Protective clothing may be required at times.
• Frequently works in office settings when collating information and preparing various communications or documents.

• Light physical demand level. Heavy lifting and carrying is not required.
• Stands and walks frequently.
• Stretching up and/or across may be required, occasionally.
• Squatting, crouching, bending, or kneeling may be required, occasionally.
• Twisting of the body or neck is not typically required. Looking upwards will be frequently required.
• Repetitive hand movements will be occasional to frequent when taking notes and preparing documentation, such as proposals and reports. Pens, ICT devices, and other common office equipment will be used frequently.
• Driving will be frequently required to attend site visits and other meetings.
• Mental activities necessary include: significant knowledge of tree surgery methods and of trees/shrubs and arboriculture; high-level information gathering, analysis, diagnostic, decision-making, and verbal and written communication skills; and sound ICT skills.

At least 7 years of practical experience as a qualified Arborist and a NZQF Level 6 Diploma in Arboriculture, or equivalent or higher relevant qualification (ANZSCO Skill Level 2). In some instances particular experience and/or on-the-job training may be required. A Class 1 Driver Licence will also be required.
