Joints, terminates and repairs copper and fibre optic telecommunications cables installed in underground pipes, trenches and overhead systems.

Installs cabling for telephone, radio, pay TV and computer transmission; joins cables and seals sheaths with lead and thermoplastic; erects, tests and maintains aerial and underground wires and cables, and radio and mobile phone antennae.

• Works predominantly outdoors for telecommunication companies.
• Works in most weather conditions and will be exposed to the elements.
• Will utilise protective clothing and equipment as required.
• May be required to work outside standard business hours in emergency situations.
• Works at height or in underground frequently.

• Physical demand level is medium.
• Standing or sitting is frequently required.
• Walking is occasionally required when gathering equipment or tools.
• Stretching up and across may be occasionally required when testing aerial and underground wires.
• Squatting, crouching, kneeling, bending or crawling is occasionally required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required especially if working underground.
• Climbing ladders and work at heights is occasionally required.
• Lifting and carrying or moving of tools, fittings, and equipment about the workshop or worksite is frequently required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for screwing, cutting and fixing of cabling and wires.
• Driving may be required to facilitate visit to client’s homes or businesses.
• Employees regularly use a wide range of hand, power and machine tools including screwdrivers, cable cutters, jointers and circuit testing meters.
• Mental skills will include technical and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
