Installs internal telecommunications and data cabling, equipment and peripherals for computer networks, telephony, cable television and monitored security and fire alarms.

Examines drawings, specifications and work areas to determine positioning and connections for equipment to be installed; installs cabling for telephone, radio, pay TV and computer transmission; joins cables and seals sheaths with lead and thermoplastic.

• Works indoors for telecommunication companies and their clients. May carry out some work in workshop areas, prior to working out of client’s homes and businesses.
• Work environments are likely to be adequately heated and ventilated.

• Physical demand level is medium.
• Standing or sitting is frequently required.
• Walking is occasionally required when gathering equipment or tools.
• Stretching up and across may be occasionally required when carrying out installation work.
• Squatting, crouching, kneeling, bending or crawling is occasionally required.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required especially if required to access areas in the ceiling or under the floor.
• Climbing ladders and work at heights is occasionally required.
• Lifting and carrying or moving of tools, fittings, and equipment about the workshop or worksite is frequently required.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for screwing, cutting and fixing of cabling and telecommunication fittings.
• Driving may be required to facilitate visits to client’s homes or businesses.
• Employees regularly use a wide range of hand, power and machine tools including screwdrivers, cable cutters, jointers and circuit testing meters.
• Mental skills will include technical and problem-solving skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
