Installation technicians work in the technology, electric, and telecommunication industries. They install home and business security systems, telecommunication systems, computer systems, and cable and satellite television systems.

In addition to installing and setting up new security, telecommunication, computer, and television systems for customers, installation technicians perform follow-up checks and maintenance to ensure that systems are functioning properly. They also conduct repairs and update equipment when necessary, may provide billing invoices when services are completed, and may collect customer payments.

• Works indoors and outdoors predominantly at private homes and businesses.
• Worksites may occasionally be dirty and dusty.
• Employees may work at height or in confined spaces on some jobs.

• Standing or sitting may be required occasionally to frequently while performing installation tasks.
• Walking is occasionally required when gathering equipment or tools and performing installations.
• Stretching up and across may be occasionally required.
• Squatting, crouching, kneeling, bending, or crawling is occasional.
• Twisting of the body or neck is occasionally required especially when working in ceilings and under-floor, sometimes in confined spaces.
• Climbing ladders and working at height can be occasionally required.
• Lifting and carrying or moving of tools, fittings, appliances, and equipment about the workshop or worksite is frequently required, although workshops are likely to be equipped with trolleys and lifting devices for heavier equipment.
• Repetitive movements are frequently required especially in the use of hands and arms for screwing, cutting, and fixing of cabling and electrical fittings.
• Driving is frequently required to facilitate visit to client’s homes or businesses.
• Employees regularly use a wide range of hand and power tools including screwdrivers, cable cutters and jointers, electric/hand drills, circuit testing meters, hammers, and other minor equipment.
• Mental skills will include: technical and problem-solving skills; good understanding and knowledge of up-to-date electronic, cable, satellite, and telecommunications systems; analysis and problem-solving skills to handle repairs and equipment issues during service calls; and good customer service skills when working directly with residential and business customers.

• ·Most employers prefer applicants with a New Zealand Certificate (Levels 3-5) in a relevant field, or an equivalent qualification. Additionally, registration with an appropriate authority is likely to be required unless working in a supervised role. For example, installation technicians who install new electrical equipment are normally required to be registered with the Electrical Workers Registration Board.
• A Full Class 1 Driver Licence is likely to be required.

There are opportunities for flexibility of movement but they are limited.
