Transmits and receives radio messages by use of morse code, voice and radio teletype.

Sends and receives messages by satellite communication systems, radio, radio telegraph, radio telephone, morse or radio telex; records incoming messages, including navigational and other data, keeping a log of messages sent and received; makes minor repairs to radio equipment or radar; provides a watch on maritime distress frequencies; broadcasts navigational and weather warnings from coastal stations to ships at sea; operates equipment which interconnects with inland service.

• Works indoors in special radio rooms or home-based communications room set up with transmitting and receiving equipment.
• Usually works in adequately heated and ventilated spaces.
• Likely to work shifts.

• The physical demand for this job is sedentary.
• Standing and walking about the work area is occasional.
• Sitting at radio equipment to send or receive messages is a constant requirement.
• Stretching and reaching across is unlikely to be necessary.
• Bending is unlikely to be necessary.
• Squatting, crouching and kneeling is not a significant component of the job.

• Contact with skin irritants or water is not a significant component of the job.
• Lifting, carrying and holding are not a significant component of the job.
• Repetitive movements are unlikely to be necessary, but use of hands for adjusting or maintaining equipment will be frequent.
• Driving of vehicles is not required.
• Use of hand-held objects and/or equipment may include computers, radio transmitters and receivers, radar equipment, radio telephones and telescopes.
• Mental skills necessary include technical, interpretation/decision-making, problem-solving and communication skills.

A New Zealand Register Level 4 qualification or at least three years of relevant experience (ANZSCO Skill Level 3). In some instances relevant experience and/or on-the-job training may be required in addition to the formal qualification. For entry-level positions on-the-job training may be sufficient.
